Community Bike Leaders Wanted
Are you interested in being part of group cycle rides taking place across Berwick Borough?
Active Berwick are looking for volunteer leaders (aged 16+) to help lead and support recreational cycle rides in the community. You need to be competent cycling in your community, able to carry out minor repair work and have a good sense of direction. The ability to communicate well with groups of people and not be shy to take the leadership role is required. The rides are designed to target families as well as to accommodate different abilities of riders. The focus of the rides is on participation rather than competition. Leaders are needed in Berwick, Seahouses and Wooler.
Mountain Bike Leader Training:
Are you interested in qualifying to lead mountain bike rides? Active Berwick supports coach and leader development and would like to hear from you if you want to take your riding further. Here are two levels of mountain bike leader awards on offer:
The Trail Cycle Leader Award is an ideal qualification for anyone who works or wishes to work in Outdoor Centres, Guiding Companies, Schools, Youth Groups etc. It is also perfect for those who just have an interest in mountain biking, improving their skills and gaining a qualification that gives them all the information to go out, have fun and be safe.
What does the TCL qualification allow you to do?

Trail Cycle Leaders are qualified to lead groups of up to 6 riders throughout Scotland and the UK on routes that are defined as being; tracks and trails that are of low to medium technical difficulty. The award covers normal summer conditions. These routes will be 90-95% ridable and take the group no more than 30 minutes walk by a reasonably fit person away from a shelter with communication, and to be no more than 600 metres in height. They will not involve cycling activity of more than one day's length.
The 2 day course and further evaluation can only be taken if a pre-requisite of logged rides and hours are submitted.
Mountain Bike Leader Award - Mountain Bike Leaders are qualified to lead groups of riders throughout Scotland and the UK as outlined below: On public highways, way marked routes, rights of way on which cycles are permitted, identifiable routes and tracks with obvious navigational features, routes requiring considerable technical ability which are rideable for 90-95% of their total length. The award covers normal summer conditions.
On multi-day trips*, and to any height above sea level and more than 30 minutes walk from the nearest shelter with communication. Multi-day trips will cover the carrying of additional equipment and planning and management of groups on such trips.
The MBL award consists of a two day training course, followed by a one day assessment – a prerequisite to this course is a number of logged hours and rides.
