Curfew Bell Tolls for Runners as a New Record is Set
This week saw the annual curfew run take place in Berwick. With another great turn out of 116 runners on the night, this meant that for three consecutive years there have been over 110 runners attend the event. Proving that the Curfew Run is one of the town's premier events. With the aim of all the runners to complete the course less than 13 minutes 91 out of 116 runners did so. However it was one staggering performance that this event will be remembered for.
With weather condition that didn't favour fast times no one was expecting to see the course record of 6:33 broken but that didn't stop Andrew Crichton smashing the course record taking a staggering 11 seconds off the record. Andrew won the senior race in 6 minutes and 22 seconds. Berwick High School Student Ciaran Turton won the Male under 16 category in a time of 7 minutes 33 seconds. In the female event Alison Brown won the Female under 16 category with a time of 8 minutes 29 seconds. In the female senior category Jane Holmes won in a time of 9 minutes. Congratulation must go to all runners who won the respective age groups. All runners should be thanked for making the event such a big hit and every runner was greeted with a standing ovation from the crowd watching as they crossed the line.
A big thank you must go to the team of organiser. Berwick Harriers yet again provided excellent service on the night, with time keeping, marshals and registration. The event was organised by Active Berwick with help coming from North Country Leisure. On the night Rapid Response provided the first aid cover for the event. The First Curfew Run was run on Wednesday 17th July 1996
The Curfew Run is run around the old Elizabethan Town walls of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The Curfew Bell has tolled daily at 8pm since the reign of William the Conqueror.
The Curfew Bell rings continually for13 minutes, this is the challenge for the all the runners 1.2 miles complete circuit of the town walls with the notorious climb up Bank Hill .
The first event was oganised by the then Berwick Borough Tourism officer Jackie Ellis with the help from Berwick Harriers.
