18-May-2009 - Spring Walking Campaign
Since the changing of the clocks the days and nights are getting longer and more people are seen to be out and taking exercise in Berwick. It is the time of year when we get in touch with our need to be outdoors and our need to be active selves.
This year Active Berwick have put together a 2009 calendar of walking events highlighting walks taking place in and around Berwick Borough. The walks can be found at www.activeberwick.co.uk in the Active Lifestyle menu. Some of the highlighted walks and walking events are weekly walks with local and surrounding area Ramblers’ groups, railway walks, walks with the Wildlife Trust, Nordic walking courses, Cheviots Challenge, Chevy Chase and many more.
If you are new to walking or need some help and guidance, the Walking the Way to Health Initiative (WHI) continues to provide weekly health walks throughout the Berwick Borough. Weekly group walks take place in Berwick, Belford, Seahouses and Wooler.
Walks are lead by a trained walk leader and are aimed at beginner and intermediate walkers of any age. Beginner walks last 3045 minutes and cover a mostly flat walking route to cater for those needing a bit more time and help. Intermediate walks last 90 minutes and are geared towards those who are able to pick up the pace a bit and also take on some moderate slopes. The friendly atmosphere and positive group dynamics of these walking groups allow new comers to feel very welcome come and join in the walks are fun and free

Finally, mark the week of April 27th to May 1st in your calendars as it is the first official UK Walk to Work Week. Walk to Work Week is all about raising awareness of the benefits of walking and encouraging the nation to fit more of it into their everyday lives. Living Streets has put together information on how to encourage individual employees and entire workplaces to walk as part of their normal workday. Register to take part at www.walkingworks.org.uk and track your progress and compare against other workplaces in the area. You can find out the total calories you have burned, carbon saved, distance walked by your workplace as a whole and other relevant and inspiring information. Let’s show the UK that walking in Berwick works.
